They ruminated on it for a few hours. Travis put his burger in the small fridge, figuring he might heat it up later. He would have tossed his cold fries but Hack stopped him, saying it was a sin to waste good food.

Travis smoothed out the empty Dick’s bag. Then he stared at it while letting his mind walk through the possibilities. He knew they should take this to Nolan but something stopped him from doing so just yet. Their boss ran the crew with an iron fist, brooking no dissension in the ranks or between members. That had never been a problem before Hack came along. When Andy’s brother Kent was with them, everything ran like clockwork. But the dumbass smacked his girlfriend one too many times and the State of Washington takes a dim view of that, especially when the woman ends up with a fractured ocular bone. Kent was doing six years for that assault, so Nolan had to bring in someone else for added muscle.

Almost immediately, it didn’t work. They used to feel like a family. Not anymore. Hack was cold and mean. Travis worried right away that the newcomer was a risk to sell them out if he got pinched. Nolan shut that discussion down in no uncertain terms. He vouched for Hack and that was that.

Except it wasn’t.

Long after Hack finished noisily eating his own burgers and all of the fries, Travis remained deep in thought.

They weren’t pleasant thoughts.
